Hie chunnt dä fium afang mau

Dieses Jahr hat mich alt gemacht, grauhaarig und ein bisschen mürbe, und doch irgendwie stärker als zuvor. Ich finde, das ist eine annehmbare Bilanz, sagen zu können, man geht aus einem Jahr stärker hinaus als man hineingegangen ist.

Da wird alles plötzlich zu einer Trophäe, die man herumzeigt als Beweis, dass man doch mehr erlebt hat als alle meinen könnten.

More Honesty
It's about permission, which is where a lot of folks get mixed up.
Sure, it's permission to stare, longer than would otherwise be acceptable.
And it's permission to demand, to control, too direct.
And it's permission to do all those things with/to a subject. Quite appealing, though we rarely admit it to ourselves.
And a lot of people linger in that space. The surface of it.
But beyond that, deeper than that, it's permission to indulge in things weird, off-kilter. To search for a moment that takes both you and your subject to a place of trust, exploration, maybe even, if you're lucky, truth.
It's permission to ask someone for their trust, in the hope you'll both be rewarded with art. Permission to give, rather than take.
But you (the photographer) have to be willing to ask. You have to be willing to ignore those initial instincts and do the work. Be patient, give of yourself to create the connection.
The kind of permission that's really helpful is the kind of you ask of yourself.

In retrospect, the in-between shots that Work are the ones that, more often than not, suggest more to the "story" than what's in the frame.
With neither of us intending for this moment to be captured, perhaps there's more honesty in it, a truth implied by awkwardness, imperfect framing, the intimation of something caught, rather than constructed.

Years fly by
Shoot the same, shoot the same people, shoot the same places...it appears that, over times, it'll all change, anyway.
I can look back at this shoot from four years ago, re-edit it, choose different photos to post...the day remains the same, but my perspective on it shifts. My tastes can shift around that day, the aspects of that day I remember re-order themselves.
Now it's not about the castle we visited. Nor is it about the shoolclass that arrived just as we were leaving.
The details that initially made the day interesting. Getting ice cream after the shoot.
All those facets recede. What emerges now, the ease with which she posed, moved. The abundance of good photos I was able to take with her help. The way she perfectly contrasted with the location.

Every photo, every shoot, every interaction, a diamond we can only appreciate in pieces.

I'm wondering if, at the end of social distancing, stay-at-home orders, quarantine, I'll still move onto something new...or just go back to photographing interesting ladies doing fun things.

Castle first, of course, then we walked the streets, looking for good light, for the right composition. I'd already spent a few days with her, she was in town looking for a change.
So we went to our favorite spot, took some photos with our favorite light.

We'd only known each other about a year, but already worked so well together. Same sensibilities, same passion for photographing people.

Gotten pretty good at recognizing the moment when folks start trusting me. They'll relax a bit, they'll laugh a little bigger, they'll move more. The key is to take advantage of that moment. Now that they trust you, you're a team. Take it farther, get weirder. Lead them away from what they were expecting from a photographer, show them what you can do. Dazzle them. Even better, bring them into the process. Dazzle yourself.

Just couldn’t get it. Tried this shot a dozen times before I stumbled upon just the right combination, proper distance, pleasing expression, light intensity. Lotta plates to spin, all at once.⁣
⁣Actually, still not sure I got it, but it was the end of the shoot, we’d hiked up and down a hill, spied on a house (even drove by the front of it, see what we could see), gotten lost in the „flüeh“ :-) (not really lost, but definitely not going in the right direction). It was time to wrap things up. And this was as close as I was gonna get, could feel it in my old bones.⁣
⁣And if this is close, I’m feeling mighty fine about the shoot as a whole.⁣

⁣⁣Ich habe anstrengende Tage hinter mir, die vollgepackt waren mit Meetings, Menschen, Organisationskram und Software-Sterben. Darüber habe ich fast vergessen, dass mir das Leben ja immer noch so seine Streiche spielt. Ablenkung durch einen vollgestopften Kalender ist ja schön und gut, nur eigentlich wollte ich ja endlich mal bewusst Entscheidungen treffen und leben – prima. Der Rückschlag kommt mit dem Leerlauf wie der Kater nach dem Saufen, nur hilft Aspirin da wohl nicht weiter.⁣⁣

I worked my way closer and closer over the course of the shoot, there’s a lot about her worth photographing, but I am and shall always be a man obsessed with faces.⁣
⁣Closer and closer, knowing at a certain point the camera won’t focus, that I’ll have to back up just to get a decent shot. But I close in anyway, I’m drawn to it, see. It’s instinct that gets me right up into someone’s face, it’s experience that has me backing up before the shot is useless.⁣

⁣Es ist weder Tag noch Nacht – doch die Farben verblassen langsam.⁣
⁣Ich versuche stets den Zeitpunkt festzumachen an dem es kippt, der an dem sich alles ändert. Es gelingt mir nicht. Noch fliegen Schwalben und Fledermäuse gleichzeitig. Ich schaue auf den Bildschirm, ich schaue nach oben, vielleicht steht da jetzt schon ein Stern. Ich weiß, dass dort immer Sterne stehen, aber wissen und wahrnehmen sind zwei unterschiedliche Dinge.⁣
⁣Liebe, Welt – in einem Augenblick wie diesem sind alle Atome gleich Sprengstoff.⁣
⁣Was macht das schon, was wird das alles, wenn es fertig ist. Was werden wir, die ohne Sorgen über morgen, sondern über Träume redend, durch die Nacht am Fenster sitzend, bis der Himmel ganz langsam von schwarz zu blau wechselt, jedes Mal viel zu früh. Irgendwann können wir uns die doppelte Menge Kaffee am Morgen nicht mehr leisten, nach einem kurzen Schlaf, der viel zu sehr dem Traum gewidmet war.⁣

⁣Es sind diese Tage nach diesen Nächten. Diese Tage, an denen alles da ist, auch die Gewissheit, dass das, was für den Augenblick nicht greifbar ist, dennoch nie ganz weg ist. Tage mit weniger Hoffnung und mehr Sicherheit, der Sicherheit, dass auch das, was geht, wiederkommen wird. Und diese Tage, von denen an alles möglich ist. Von denen an es nicht mehr darum geht, das Ziel zu kennen, sondern in jeder Sekunde den Weg zu gehen. Mit jeder Faser dieses Seins. ⁣It’s a lie, of course. The deep dark secret is it’s all a reconstruction of what I see in my head (which most likely is something I’ve already seen in the world and am seeking to replicate), it’s all me trying to convey not necessarily what is, but rather what once was.⁣

⁣The crowds were intoxicating, just all those people on the street, everyone drawn outdoors to soak up the summer sun.

⁣Didn’t quite catch it all the way I wanted to, wanted her enveloped in the masses, yet still popping out, distinct amongst all them peoples.

⁣Got close, but when I was there, when I was in the moment, I was too caught up in the energy, in the gravitational pull of people-watching.

⁣The problem isn’t getting the shot right. It’s being amongst all that stimuli, deep in that mass of people, and gathering the strength to tear my attention away from it all.
